The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) is an international programme that coordinates global climate research, which is sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). WCRP's largest activities are its four "Core Projects" (SPARC, CLIVAR, CliC, and GEWEX) that support climate research on the major Earth climate system components: atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere, and land surface, as well as their interactions.

Since the 5^th phase of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report and the WCRP Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) experiments, the Decadal Climate Prediction Project (DCPP) is a separate part of the WCRP activity. Thus, the coordination of the international scientific and practical aspects of decadal climate prediction research within WCRP is undertaken by the DCPP Panel, where Iuliia Polkova (leader of the area "Climate monitoring and Earth system forecasting") represents DWD since May 2024, replacing Wolfgang Müller (OceanWeather project). One of the activities of the DCPP Panel is the preparation of the experiment-protocol for the next phase of CMIP.

The German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst; DWD) remains the unique provider in Germany for the operational decadal climate predictions, supporting WMO and Copernicus EU activities, and is committed to contribute with the CMIP7 experiments to the next phase of the IPCC report, including the decadal climate predictions. The HErZ project OceanWeather and further major contributors - the project “Coming Decade”, with partners from DWD, MPI-M (Wolfgang Müller), Universität Hamburg (Johanna Baehr) continue improving the DWD operational decadal prediction system and supporting its transition to the ICON-XPP climate model, strengthening the climate services for Germany and worldwide.
