Final Symposium of the HIWeather project of the WWRP (WMO)
The grand finale of the HIWeather project will take place from 09.-13.09.2024 in the form of the HIWeather Final Symposium in Munich.
News from May 03, 2024
The HIWeather Projekt is part of the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Over the past 10 years, HIWeather has brought together researchers from all over the world and from different disciplines to jointly address a common challenge: make forecasts and warnings of extreme weather events more effective in order to save lives and reduce damage and disruption caused by weather-related hazards.
The findings were compiled, for example, in the book „Towards the „perfect“ weather warning - Bridging Disciplinary Gaps through Partnership and Communication“.
The grand finale of the project will take place from 9-13 September 2024 in the form of the HIWeather Final Symposiumin Munich. The groups involved in HIWeather and other interested participants from the international research community will look back on the knowledge gained and the successes achieved. Open questions will also be identified and next steps will be decided in order to continue working on a future in which early warnings and early action will save many more lives and livelihoods. The focus of the final symposium will be on the following topics:
- Understanding and predicting hazards
- Human impact, vulnerability and risks
- Communication
- Citizen science
- Impact-based forecasting and alerting
- Evaluation & Value Chain
The symposium is organized by the WMO, together with the DWD and the Collaborative Research Center „Waves to Weather“, which has been a joint project of the WWRP since 2020. The DWD and in particular HErZ with the WEXICOM project has contributed to the success of HIWeather in the research topics of "Communication", "User-Oriented Evaluation" and "Impacts, Vulnerability and Risks".
Abstracts for poster contributions can be submitted until 15 June. More information can be found here.
